Tchaikovsky: All-Night Vigil

Tchaikovsky’s Divine Liturgy

THIS CONCERT WAS LIVESTREAMED without an in-person audience on Saturday March 14th at 7:30 p.m. Pacific Time. See above for video.

In alignment with Governor Kate Brown’s limits on public gatherings and also with Portland Public Schools’ policy on non-essential extracurricular activities, the Pacific Youth Choir has decided to withdraw their large number of singers from this concert.

However, the 16 professional adult singers of Cappella Romana performed the program on Saturday before you–a virtual audience–safely via livestream.

Benedict Sheehan (“rising star in Orthodox liturgical music”—Orthodox Arts Journal) returns to conduct a once-in-a-lifetime program. Tchaikovsky’s singular artistic voice in his Liturgy broke open the floodgates of creativity in Russian Orthodox choral music. Grand and majestic sections of the Divine Liturgy beautifully contrast with its intimate moments of devotion and awe. Richly scored motets by Rachmaninoff, Chesnokov, and Sheehan himself amplify the legacy of Tchaikovsky’s monumental achievement.
