Cappella Romana enjoys Southern hospitality at The Liturgical Arts Academy 2024!

Associate Music Director John Michael Boyer, principal cantor and soprano Photini Downie Robinson, principal cantor Constantine Kokenes, The Divine Liturgy author/compiler Samuel Herron, and Director of Publications Richard Barrett attended The Liturgical Arts Academy at the Diakonia Retreat Center of the Greek Orthodox Metropolis of Atlanta during the week of 18-24 August.

Convening every year during the third week of August, TLAA offers 40+ of classroom and applied intensive Byzantine chant and iconography instruction to participants from all over the country. John, Samuel, and Photini served as the chant faculty for the week; John offered a master class format to select students, while Photini and Samuel co-taught Intermediate and Advanced sections. Byzantine Chant, The Received Tradition: A Lesson Book formed the spine of the classroom instruction, and Samuel’s The Divine Liturgy served as the core repertoire for the services held in the magnificent Panagiótissa chapel.

The Academy opened proceedings with a Service of the Blessing of the Waters found in John Michael Boyer’s forthcoming Mysteries: Byzantine Chant for Orthodox Sacraments book!
