Dr. Dana Marsh will conduct Cappella Romana in next week’s performances of “Renaissance Easter in Spain and Portugal,” replacing Dr. Owen Rees, whose visa has been delayed at the US Embassy in London.
Marsh makes his Cappella Romana debut with this program. He has both directed and sung in multiple early music ensembles in the UK and the US, including touring and recording with Capella Portuguesa, under Owen Rees.
Acclaimed by the Los Angeles Times as “an energetic and persuasive conductor” and by Choir & Organ (UK) as “a flexible and vivacious director of voices,” Dr. Dana Marsh has undertaken a broad-ranging musical career as a conductor, singer, organist and academic. His early training was as a boy chorister at St. Thomas Choir School in New York (under Gerre Hancock) and at Salisbury Cathedral in England. During high school, he was organ scholar at St. Mark’s Cathedral (Seattle), learning under Peter Hallock. He received his Bachelor of Music degree from the Eastman School of Music, with subsequent Masters and Doctoral degrees in historical musicology coming from the University of Oxford (UK).
Marsh has taught early-music history at both Oxford and Cambridge universities and has published articles through the scholarly presses of both institutions. Guest-conducting appearances have brought Dr. Marsh into fruitful collaborations with the London Mozart Players, Magnificat (UK), Ensemble Charivari Agréable, the Band of Instruments, the Choir of St. Thomas Fifth Avenue, the Musica Angelica Baroque Orchestra (Los Angeles), the Indianapolis Baroque Orchestra, the Indiana University Early-Music Institute’s “Bloomington Bach Cantata Project”, and the Choir of Girton College Cambridge (UK), where, in the latter case, he was a Fellow and Director of Chapel Music until 2010.
Marsh also founded the British early-music group, Musica Humana Oxford (2001-2008), which performed frequently in the UK and toured to the USA to high critical praise (“…pleasing to the ear and satisfying to the soul.” – LA Times). Since 2010, Marsh has served as Canon Organist and Director of Music at Christ Church Cathedral in Indianapolis, one of the most prominent exponents of the Anglican choral tradition in the USA today.

On Friday, 12 April at St. Mary’s Cathedral in Portland and Saturday, 13 April at Holy Rosary Church in West Seattle. Both concerts begin at 8pm, with a pre-concert talk at 7pm.
